LCW’s webinar “Planning for Black History Month” is an opportunity to preview two of our cultural competence trainings. Together with LCW facilitators, you’ll participate in activities from “Cultural Immersion: Understanding the Black Experience in America” and our new discussion-based training, “Upskilling Your Ally Voice: How to Answer Difficult Questions about the Black Experience.”

Cultural Immersion: Understanding the Black Experience In America

Course description:

“Understanding the Black Experience in America” is a visceral experience built and vetted by Black/African American experts and their allies. In this course, participants take a candid and deep look at the complexities, experiences, and worldviews of the African American community. Intentionally co-facilitated by Black/African American and Ally facilitators, these conversations help learners understand and appreciate the complexity and history of Black Americans, and to build actionable skills for responding to stereotypes and for recognizing and responding to the challenges members of this community face in the workplace. Time is also spent analyzing and comparing intent versus impact, and explores missed opportunities for connection with and elevation of Black colleagues.

In it’s full form, this cultural immersion is delivered as a 4-hour facilitation. This webinar will preview the full session while focusing on an activity taken from the full course agenda.

Objectives:

• Explore the factors, from past to present, that shape the lived experience of the Black community today – from the joyful to the challenging.
• Start unpacking gaps in knowledge around cultural, historical, and social issues that limit understanding, equity or true inclusion
• Get introduced to stereotype threat and its impact in the workplace
• Get more comfortable having meaningful, brave conversations about race

Upskilling Your Ally Voice: How to Answer Difficult Questions about the Black Experience

Course description:

This session is designed for individuals who have already attended our “Understanding the Black Experience in America” Cultural Immersion and are interested in and motivated to build their ally muscle. Co-facilitated by Black/African American and Ally facilitators, participants will learn a framework for answering difficult questions about race. Following an example modeled by the facilitators, participants practice using this framework in small groups with an assigned question (e.g., “Why do we need to keep talking about racial differences?”), receiving coaching and feedback from the facilitators. You may choose five questions for the session from a list we will provide you in advance. This session is a must for anyone who is serious about being a courageous, active ally.

In it’s full form, this interactive session is delivered as a 1.5-hour facilitation. This webinar will preview the full session while focusing on one discussion topic taken from the full discussion list.

Objectives:

• Put to use what you learned in the “Understanding the Black Experience” Cultural Immersion
• Learn a framework you can use to have brave conversations about race and be an ally for the Black community
• Practice answering difficult questions about race
• Learn additional actions you can take to upskill your ally voice
